Toys for Tots at the David Barton Gym_Dec 21, 2009 : The 8th Annual Toy Drive, hosted by David Barton Gym at the newly opened Astor Place fitness mecca, is what Christmas is all about: pushing and shoving and standing in line with a gift for a sweet little tot in one hand and a cocktail in the other. The legendary party queen Susanne Bartsch and her absolutely adorable cuddly stud David Barton welcomed “regulars” and just about everyone else in New York for their annual Toys for Tots party. Iconic fashion designers Marc Jacobs and Narciso Rodriguez, and Olympic Medalist Jason Rogers were among the guests who brought unwrapped toys, which will be donated to the Metropolitan Hospital, St Vincent’s Hospital, St Lucke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, Sunny Downstate, Kings County Hospital, Beth Israel Hospital and the Lower East Side Girls Club, NE Community Center and Astor Kids. New York Social Diary Luncheon_Dec 17, 2009 : http://www.newyorksocialdiary.com/node/1429056 Holiday parties. Down at Swifty’s we had a holiday luncheon for our contributors to the New York Social Diary. This is of no particular interest to readers, I know, but it does amaze me and JH that there is a core group who provide interesting edit for the NYSD on a weekly basis. Present at the luncheon were: Jeanne Lawrence (SF and Shanghai Social Diary), Alex Lebenthal, the chronicler of changing times amongst the Wall Street crowd; Jesse Kornbluth, book review blogger (Headbutler.com), social commentator, and our literary Boswell of the world; Hilary Geary Ross who pens the Palm Beach Social Diary during the season; Charlie Scheips, the loquacious and peripatetic curator, art historian and uber-gadfly of the world of the creative arts; Jordana Zizmor, whose reviews and photos of the restaurants around town plus their bill of fare can make your mouth water no matter the time of day; photographer Ann Watt who covers many events for NYSD with her camera; Carol Joynt who records the Washington scene for us, and came up from the nation’s capital on the Acela to join us; Roger Webster who handles a lot of the NYSD public relations and events as well as contributes with his camera and reporting abilities; Wendy Lerman who reports on the New York Shopping Diary; Sian Ballen who has been working with JH and me since Avenue magazine in the late 90s, and Quest in the early Aughts, and who with Lesley Hauge, (also since Avenue) conducts the weekly NYSD HOUSE interviews; Gail Karr who goes out into the world and sells those beautiful advertisements that we see on the NYSD, and Sam Dangremond, a recent college grad and newcomer to New York who is working for New York magazine fulltime and occasionally contributing his reporting services to the NYSD. Missing were Anita Sarko (who was under the weather), Jamee Gregory, who had another lunchdate, Jill Krementz who is committed every Wednesday to volunteering at the Memorial Sloane-Kettering Cancer Center; Augustus (Clemmer) Mayhew who writes so many wonderful Palm Beach real estate and history pieces, and Ki Hackney who has been away from the fray for awhile but when she is present is a crackerjack reporting on things fashionable and stylish. JH and I started the NYSD in September of 2000. For a long time it was just the two of us – he on the camera and the technological and I at the Diary and whatever. Over time we’ve added, and are still adding to a staff of contributors who enhance the NYSD in so many ways. I know that many regular readers check out the Diary and the Party Pictures and forsake the other diaries and report, for whatever reason. Just so you know: the talent producing them is the best and there is very possibly something you will love learning. Swifty’s provided us with a menu of choices in the appetizer, main course and dessert departments. For the seventeen of us, the bill came to a little more than $800 plus tip, or $960. That included three courses, drinks, coffees, teas, etc. which works out to a little more than $45 a person for a complete and delicious lunch. The service at Swifty’s is excellent. You feel like the staff cares about you. I report this just in case someone is looking for something like this. Many of our contributors barely know each other, if at all. Although as New York goes, many of them know of each other from one direction or another because they are all pros in their fields. And so, from the moment they were seated at table, the decibel level of conversation was very high and unrelenting. Sometimes when I’d tap the glass with my knife to get attention, I’d get no attention because they couldn’t hear it through the din. New Yorkers love to talk. And talk. And talk. We met at 12:45 and luncheon was over at 3 pm. Nothing was accomplished except everyone getting a look at Who Else and possibly enjoying their conversation.

Jewish Museum Family Hanukkah Party_Dec 15, 2009 : On Tuesday evening, December 15, 2009, The Jewish Museum presented its fifteenth annual Family Hanukkah Party from 5:30 to 7:30 pm. This special event, which benefits The Jewish Museum, included many activities especially suited for grandparents, parents, and children up to age 10. Party attendees enjoyed: magic by Magic-Al Garber; balloon art by The Mad Hatters and The Ballooniacs; music by Laughing Pizza; face painting by New York Fun Factory; family photos by Sarah Merians Photography; Miracle Makeovers by Cozy’s Cuts for Kids; and a buffet dinner and dessert. Arts and crafts workshops throughout the Museum rounded out the event. Co-chairs Ray and Ross Hammerman, Jacqueline Harris Hochberg and Robert J. Hochberg, and Sharon Coplan Hurowitz and Richard Hurowitz have been involved in planning a lively evening to benefit The Jewish Museum’s educational programs and exhibitions. Generous support has been provided by The Hain Celestial Group, maker of Earth’s Best and Terra Chips. Tickets range from $75 for an individual child, $150 for an individual adult (children under 2 admitted free). Families brought unwrapped gifts for children in need, which will be donated to a charity. Hanukkah commemorates the miraculous events and heroic deeds that occurred in ancient Israel during a desperate war for Jewish religious and political freedom. Bennack, Jr., Vice Chairman and CEO, Hearst Corporation; John J. Mack, Chairman and CEO, Morgan Stanley; and Leslie Moonves, President and CEO, CBS Corporation. The Partnership's longtime mission and passion have been to provide life-saving information for families dealing with drug and alcohol abuse, and the disease of addiction. Since the inception of the Partnership in 1987, there are 9 million fewer people using illicit drugs. Yet the problem continues to have a devastating impact around the country. Half of the 23 million Americans suffering from addiction are 29 years of age or younger. There are more than 2 million teenagers who need treatment. And, tragically, over 90% of these teens in crisis get no professional help. Today, the Partnership is working with parents, world-renowned scientists, and parenting experts to develop programs that foster prevention and early intervention and provide help for those in trouble with drugs and alcohol. Adults in Toyland – Casino Night Nov 12, 2009 : Adults in Toyland – Casino Night 2009, presented by the Hassenfeld Committee and the KiDS of NYU Foundation Associates Committee, attracted over 600 young New York City professionals at the Edison Ballroom. This fun-filled evening of cocktails, casino games and a premiere silent auction raised important funds for the Stephen D. Hassenfeld Children’s Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the NYU Langone Medical Center Department of Pediatrics. CHANEL's 'Fete d'Hiver'_Nov 4, 2009 : On Wednesday, November 4, 2009, The Society of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC) Associates Committee hosted their annual fall gala titled CHANEL's Fete d'Hiver after the renowned French winter festival. The event will be held at the Four Seasons Restaurant in New York. Sponsored by CHANEL Fine Jewelry and Credit Suisse, the high-spirited and glamorous evening is co-hosted by Blake Lively, Diane Kruger, Camilla Belle, and Claire Danes. Over 300 guests attended and enjoyed music by The Misshapes, and décor by Bronson Van Wyck. The evening’s Co-Chairs were Veronica Beard, Amy Raiter Dwek, Dara O'Hara, and Maria Villalba. Morgenthau was honored with the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Distinguished Public Service Award at the Plaza Hotel. It was presented him by another distinguished gentleman and scholar, William J. vanden Heuvel who is the Founder and now Chair Emeritus of Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute as well as Chair of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Four Freedoms Park. Mr. Morgenthau has been in public service most of his adult life. President John F. Kennedy appointed him US Attorney for the Southern District of New York in 1961. In 74 he was elected District Attorney of New York County and has since served nine terms. This one is his last.

Fountain House Fall Fete_October 21, 2009 : Fountain House, the world’s leading provider of rehabilitation services for men, women, and young adults living with major mental illness, held its Fall Fête on Wednesday, October 21st 2009. The evening began with a cocktail reception at the Palm Court at the Plaza Hotel, sponsored by David Yurman, Milly, The Plaza and AstraZeneca, followed by dinner and dancing at The Racquet and Tennis Club on Park Avenue. The cocktail reception honored Today Show correspondent Jill Rappaport, who, after serving as the show's entertainment reporter for 17 years, switched gears to become the animal welfare reporter. Her stories now focus on animal issues. "My heart, my passion, has always been my animals," she says. "To do stories, animal welfare stories, about medical advancements in animal cancer, adoption, rescue, is an opportunity to do what I love." Rappaport is also an author, and two of her books, Jack & Jill: The Miracle Dog with a Happy Tail to Tell and 500 Cats, were available at the party. Francis Battista, co-founder of Best Friends Animal Society, was also in attendance. His organization runs the nation's largest sanctuary for displaced, homeless, or unwanted domestic animals. Joe Panz and Big Ant of Rescue Ink, a gang of macho motorcycle-riding tough guys who have bonded together to fight animal cruelty, stopped by to support the cause. Casita Maria is a 501@3 non-for-profit organization whose mission is to create a gateway of opportunity through after school education in the Arts, Literacy and Job Readiness while addressing critical needs for youth, families and seniors in predominantly Hispanic communities in the South Bronx and East Harlem. Tarell Alvin McCraney Wins 1st NY Times Outstanding Playwright Award_May 27, 2009 : The New York Times has awarded playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney their first Outstanding Playwright Award, to honor his play "The Brothers Size," at a ceremony held at The New York Times Building. The NYT award was decided by a selection committee including playwrights Edward Albee, Richard Greenberg, James Lapine, 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage ("Ruined") and New York Times Arts and Culture editors. McCraney, 27, is a 2007 graduate of the Yale School of Drama playwriting program and is an international playwright in residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was raised in New Orleans and currently resides in Miami. Ben Brantley of The New York Times called McCraney an "astonishing young dramatist," when reviewing his production of "Wig Out" last year at the Vineyard Theater in New York.

Lincoln Center's 50th Anniversary Celebration_Yearlong_May 11, 2009 : Fifty years ago, Lincoln Center pioneered the concept of a performing arts campus as a catalyst for urban renewal and played a significant role in restoring confidence in its Upper West Side neighborhood. Since then it has become a model for performing arts centers around the world and has made an enormous cultural and economic contribution to the city, the state, and the nation. To kick off the anniversary celebration, an unprecedented campus-wide Leadership Breakfast gathered together trustees from all twelve Lincoln Center resident organizations on May 11, 2009 to honor the role civic leadership has played in the continued vitality of Lincoln Center as it enters its 50th year. On the same day, a special program commemorating Lincoln Center ’s original groundbreaking ceremony with U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower will be held in the newly revitalized Alice Tully Hall. Performances will pay tribute both to the past 50 years, as well as to the next generation of Lincoln Center ’s artists and audiences. The event was attended by top elected officials, performing artists, civic and community leaders, and representatives from all 12 Lincoln Center resident organizations. To close the anniversary year, Lincoln Center will throw a campus-wide open house.

The Mets Host 7th Annual Autism Awareness Day at Citi Field _May 9, 2009 : The New York Mets hosted their seventh annual Autism Awareness Day Saturday, May 9, 2009 when the Mets play the Pittsburgh Pirates. Singer, songwriter, actor and entertainer Sebastian Bach, best known for selling 20 million albums as the lead singer of Skid Row performed a special pre-game set in support of VH1 Classic Rock Autism, a campaign designed to help educate parents and build awareness about autism. Gary Dell’Abate of the Howard Stern Show threw out the first pitch as host of Autism Awareness Day. (You call that a throw Gary!!) PIX 11 anchor Jim Watkins and his wife Lauren served as co-chairs of the event. The Mets have teamed up with autism organizations over the years to help raise almost $1 million for the New York autism community. One out of every 150 children is diagnosed with autism, making it more common than pediatric cancer, diabetes and AIDS combined. It’s four times more likely to occur in boys than girls and there is no cure.

Frick Collection _ Norton Simon Museum_Feb. 9, 2009 : Frick Collection _ Norton Simon Museum_Feb. 9, 2009 About two hundred guests attended a reception at the Frick Collection for the opening of an unprecedented reciprocal loan collaboration between the Frick and the Norton Simon Museum in Pasadena. In the Oval Room on view were five 16th and 17th century masterpieces from the Norton Simon — none of which has left its Southern California home in almost three decades. The five featured paintings are: Jacopo Bassano’s (Jacopo da Ponte, 1510–1592) Flight into Egypt, c. 1544– 45; Peter Paul Rubens’s (1577–1640) Holy Women at the Sepulchre, c. 1611–14; Guercino’s (Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, 1591–1666) Aldrovandi Dog, c. 1625; Francisco de Zurbarán’s (1598–1664) Still Life with Lemons, Oranges and a Rose, 1633; and Bartolomé Esteban Murillo’s (1617–1682) Birth of Saint John the Baptist, c. 1660. As an extra added coup: none of these artists are currently represented in the Frick’s collection.
